Not Guilty Verdicts in Hillsborough Trial
Today, following submissions of no case to answer, a jury at the Lowry theatre was directed by Mr Justice Davis to enter not guilty verdicts against three defendants alleged to have orchestrated a police cover up following the Hillsborough Stadium disaster in 1989.
Chris Daw Q.C. and Austin Welch represented retired Chief Superintendent Donald Denton. Mr Denton, formerly of the South Yorkshire Police, had been charged with perverting the course of justice by ordering the amendments and alteration of accounts that were provided to West Midland Police for use in the Taylor Inquiry. Mr Justice Davis accepted all of the grounds advanced on behalf of Mr Denton that there was no case to answer. A copy of the judge’s ruling can be found here, the annex to the ruling can be found here and the Press Summary can be found here.
A press release provided by Mike Rainford of JMW solicitors can be found here.
Chris and Austin represented Mr Denton and another former Chief Superintendent of SYP (who was investigated by the IOPC but not charged) at the inquests heard before Lord Justice Goldring, the longest running inquests in English legal history.
Chris and Austin were instructed by Ian Lewis and Mike Rainford of JMW Solicitors.
