David Pojur has recently concluded two significant inquests in his role as Counsel to the Inquest (CTI), demonstrating his extensive expertise in handling complex legal and medical issues within the inquest process.
In the first inquest, David acted as CTI in a jury inquest into the death of a lone injured male who was attended by police and paramedics in the early hours. The individual displayed unrecognised focal seizures that escalated into full seizure activity, ultimately leading to cardiac arrest. Expert medical opinion presented during the inquest clarified that the seizure activity was not due to epilepsy but was identified as status epilepticus, a condition involving ongoing seizures, here associated with the ingestion of a toxic substance, for which no safe level exists. The jury also heard evidence on the adequacy of police first aid training and the potential for survival, emphasising the critical nature of timely and appropriate medical response in such scenarios.
In another inquest where David served as CTI, he called upon an expert to elucidate the requirements of a Nikah (marriage) ceremony. The female was isolated and honour-based violence ensued. This case involved a male who had been convicted of severe sadistic sexual offences and, while under a hospital order, formed a relationship with a staff member. He later married and committed similar offences against his partner while on conditional licence. The inquest relied on expert forensic psychiatric opinions and a Domestic Homicide Review. The judge-led inquest concluded with a comprehensive narrative consistent with the criminal convictions, highlighting significant missed opportunities by the authorities to prevent further harm.
These inquests underscore David Pojur’s ability to navigate intricate legal and medical territories, ensuring thorough investigations and comprehensive conclusions that address all facets of the cases.
