About Rani Kaur

Rani is undertaking her pupillage under the supervision of Austin Welch.

Pior to pupillage, Rani worked as a paralegal in the in-house legal team at the General Medical Council where she prepared cases for presentation to the Medical Practitioners Tribunal. Rani’s role involved:

  • Taking and drafting witness statements
  • Drafting instructions to counsel, allegations, submissions for the Interim Orders Tribunal and interim applications
  • Supporting witnesses through the fitness to practise process including attending hearings before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal
  • Instructing medical experts, reviewing reports and attending conferences
  • Supporting unrepresented doctors through the fitness to practise process
  • Analysing evidence including witness statements, expert reports, voice recordings and mobile phone data
  • Attending hearings including appeals under section 40 of the Medical Act
  • Having conduct of Medical Practitioners Tribunal Review Hearings
  • Assisting and supporting solicitors, attending conferences with counsel and managing a large case load

The cases Rani worked on concerned allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment and dishonesty. Rani therefore has a detailed understanding of fitness to practise investigations. During this time, Rani worked closely with a number of vulnerable witnesses and is therefore adept at working with clients and guiding them through the legal process.

Prior to her role at the GMC, Rani worked as a legal assistant to two personal injury barristers in Manchester. This involved conducting preliminary case analysis, undertaking legal research and drafting pleadings on complex, high-value, multi-track litigation.  The cases Rani worked on were for both Claimant and Defendant clients and often involved considerable medical evidence. She also worked on cases involving allegations of fundamental dishonesty resulting in contempt of court proceedings.
