After 82 days of prosecution evidence Hugh Barton, instructed by Matt Corn of Olliers Solicitors, secured the acquittal of his client in an alleged £5.5 million pension fraud.
Hugh’s client had stood trial with 8 others on a count of Conspiracy to Defraud. Together they were alleged to have persuaded over 68 people from around the country to transfer their personal pensions. Thereafter it was alleged that “Pension Liberation” had occurred with the funds of the pensions being dissipated via a number of companies.
The case involved complex issues of fact and law with the prosecution forensic accountant giving evidence for over a month. At the end of the prosecution case Mr Barton made a submission of no case to answer on behalf of his client. After lengthy legal argument it was allowed. The jury then found the client not guilty on the direction of the judge. The trial continues against the remaining defendants.
